What is Pilates?

Pilates, pioneered by the late Joseph Pilates, is a mind-body exercise system to strengthen the weak and challenge the strong. Joseph Pilates was a German born expatriate who first made his mark in England during world war 1 when he developed a series of exercises and innovative equipment to help prisoners of war regain strength and mobility. Exercises can be performed on a mat or on specialised equipment. When Joseph Pilates moved to New York, the professional dance community there discovered his conditioning techniques could help to prevent injury and improve strength while maintaining long, even muscle tone.

What is Hatha Yoga?

Hatha Yoga works through the mastery of the body and breath. It is the most practical form of yoga and the best known form in the West. ‘Ha’ means sun and ‘Tha’ means moon. So Hatha refers to the balance between the sun and moon, male and female, day and night, negative and positive, yin and yang, hot and cold or any other opposite, yet balancing pairs. When this concept is applied, it could refer to bringing the two sides of the body into a state of balance, through the development of equal strength and flexibility on both sides. It could also refer to bringing the two hemispheres of the brain in to balanced functioning, so that the logical, mathematical side and the creative, intuitive side are encouraged to function harmoniously and equally efficiently.

The control of the breathing is central to Hatha Yoga practice.

What is the difference between Pilates & Yoga?

Pilates works to realign the body, it aids to streamline and tone up the body parts which are bulky in nature. Pilates is based on the core principles of body alignment, co-ordination, concentration and breath control.

What is the difference between the different types of yoga?

There are different schools of yoga taught in the West, all of which are derived from Hatha yoga. The four most common schools are Iyengar Yoga, Sivananda Yoga, Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga and Kundalini Yoga.

Iyengar Yoga was developed by BKS Iyengar, who was born in India in 1918 and still lives there today. Iyengar is a precise system , concentrating on physical alignment of postures and often using straps, blocks and other props to assist.

Sivananda Yoga was developed by the medical doctor Swami Sivananda, who was born in South India in 1887. This versatile approach, based on 12 key postures, posture variations, sun salutations, breathing techniques, meditation and chanting. It is particularly adaptable form of yoga, from a gentle approach to a more rigorous one.

Astanga Vinyasa Yoga, taught by Sri K Pattabhi Jois, is based on ancient manuscripts called the Yoga Korunta, rediscovered in the early 20th century. This manual contains a system of

Hatha Yoga, believed to be the practice intended by Patanjali in the Yoga Sutras to integrate the eight limbs of yoga. Astanga Vinyasa Yoga is an athletic and physically demanding form of yoga.

Kundalini Yoga is based on the teachings of Sikh master Yogi Bhajan, who introduced the system to the West in 1969. This form of yoga makes use of the breathing technique called ‘the fire breath’ while executing postures. It focusses on the hand and finger gestures, body locks, chanting and meditation. Its aim is to awaken the dormant energy reserves at the base of the spine and raise this energy to the head area.
