Reading Dr Rangan Chatterjee’s excellent book ‘Feel Better in 5’ has inspired me to share with you the 6 things that I incorporate into my daily routine that you could do to make you feel better and improve your wellbeing. All 6 take no more than an extra 5 minutes a day as most of them can be incorporated in to things that you already do.

Step 1. 

This is the only one that will take a little extra time. Either before or after you shower in the morning, do a simple yoga routine to stretch your muscles and wake up your body. I guarantee this will really set you up for the day. I like to do a variation of the sun salutation, with an extra hip opening stretch. You can follow my short routine ‘Warm Up In 5’ here. You will need to sign up to access it and all my other free workouts. 

Step 2.

When you are in the shower give thanks for all the things in your life that you are grateful for. When I am standing underneath that lovely stream of warm water cleansing my body, I always feel grateful. Take some time to focus on all the wonderful things in your life and give thanks. I start with, “I am so happy and grateful for……………….” Even if you don’t think you have anything to be grateful for; Be thankful that you are still breathing. Focusing on the positive things in your life will help to elevate your mood and will attract more good things in to your life.

Step 3.

When brushing your teeth, practise balancing on one leg. Good balance is important for many reasons, not least to help prevent injury. To learn more about why balance is so important read my last blog post.

Step 4.

Whilst you are looking in the mirror brushing your hair, putting your make-up on or adjusting your tie, look yourself in the eyes and say, “I Love You, I Really Love You.” This may feel uncomfortable at first, but stick with it, it will become easier. I am not talking about being egotistical or vain here as that is not loving yourself. I am talking about having respect for yourself, believing in your worth and being grateful for your amazing body and mind. In the words of Louise Hay, “This kind of self love can create miracles.” After I Love You, make a vow to go through the whole day without criticising yourself. Every time you catch yourself about to give yourself a hard time say, “STOP” and smile.

Step 5.

Eat your breakfast outside. If you don’t have an outside space or the weather is just too bad, sit by the window. Look at the trees, listen to the birds, watch the clouds in the sky. Spending time in nature always gives us a boost and can help to reduce stress. If you live in a city, try to find a route to work that takes your through a park and really notice the nature all around you.

Step 6. 

Before you go to sleep at night. Lie in bed on your back, close your eyes and start to pay attention to your breathing. Take a moment to once again to be grateful for all the good things that happened in the day. Then repeat the statement, “I go to sleep quickly and easily, I sleep soundly through the night to awake in the morning refreshed and energised.” Enjoy a good night’s sleep.
